Deane Johnson

September - Featured Artist - Deane Johnson

Deane Johnson has been an active photographer since acquiring his first Canon FTb in 1976. He grew up in Grand Forks, ND, and has lived and traveled throughout northern Minnesota. Drawn to the lakes and woods of Park Rapids, MN in 1980, he has lived there since then. A retired family physician, he was a founding member of the Jackpine Writers’ Bloc, plays clarinet and saxophone, and was a co-owner of Beagle Books of Park Rapids with his wife Jill until 2007. He photographed and wrote Best of Itasca: A Guide to Minnesota’s Oldest State Park, and collaborated with Jill on Little Minnesota:100 Towns Around 100 and Little Minnesota in World War II.

Mississippi Headwaters Milky Way Itasca State Park, MN   (above)

The Headwaters in the middle of the night is a very different place than it is in the middle of the day.  As you approach, you might hear the sounds of a small animal scurrying away in the woods, but then it just the sound of flowing water.  The sky above is dark enough for our galaxy to shine through, and on this night in May, Jupiter helped create the perfect Christmas tree.

Preachers Grove Itasca State Park, MN   (right)

What comes to mind as you walk into this majestic stand of Red (Norway) Pines? The fog had softened the huge columns on this morning, muting sound and giving the grove an ethereal presence. Red maple saplings, like a burst of fire in front of an old fire scar, recall the intensity of the 1714 blaze that burned everything down to mineral soil, clearing the way for these pine seedlings.

Showy Lady’s Slipper Itasca State Park, MN   (left)

Imagine yourself a bee that has just entered this radiant slipper. You won’t exit the way you came in, but will follow the lines along the foot of the slipper.  Then as you reach the heel, it is a tight squeeze up, where you are given a load of pollen on your way out.
