Created for the exhibit Polar Opposites, the Silent Screams series are mixed media works approximately 22 x 30" in size. These works were created using old drawings that the artist Dawn Rossbach upcycled to explore techniques using acrylic paint and cold wax. During the process of creating the first one, the process was failing to produce results that Rossbach was satisfied with, and using an older technique of washing the drawings, the work became quite chaotic. Deciding to unify the work by organizing the work by adding layers of gridded squares, the abstracted portraits began to appear and screaming mouths were a dominant image. The process reflected much of the chaos and divisiveness that we are living through the pandemic, social and political landscapes. Using pieces of acetate, the anonymously submitted "screams" were placed on the originals and were interchangeable to give equal time for the voices that needed to be heard. The silent screams are things that people wanted to scream out but did not because of risk to job, family or friends, or place in society.
Available here in a variety of media choices and some limited products HERE.
