This painting was created after viewing a photograph published by the New York Times of a photo of a woman and her two children dead on the streets of Irpin, near Kyiv, Ukraine. Moved as so many artists to express the hope and determination of these people who are fighting for their democracy, Rossbach incorporated the national flower of Ukraine, the sunflower. The four flowers represent the mother, her two children, and their guide and used the title Forget-Me-Not to remember them not in death, but as hope for the war to end. Incorporated into the composition, the artist painted squares that represent the words of President Zelensky, “Despite the fact that all large cities of our country are now blocked, nobody is going to enter and intervene with our freedom and country. And believe you me, in every square of today, no matter what it’s called. It’s going to be called as today, Freedom Square in every city of our country. Nobody is going to break us. We are strong."
The lines are representative of a map, connecting the "Freedom Squares" of the towns and cities. The original is available in the gallery and available here in printed media.
